ERE certificates: did you know your charging station can earn you money

Charging your electric car at home costs money. But did you know that since 2026 you can actually earn money from the electricity you use to charge your car?

Thanks to ERE certificates, you can receive compensation under certain conditions for the electricity used to charge your EV. And the best part: you don’t need to drive more or consume extra power to benefit.

At ShareCharge, we believe electric driving should not only be more sustainable, but also more financially rewarding. That’s why we’re happy to explain what ERE certificates are, how they work, and what they can mean for you.

What exactly are ERE certificates?
ERE stands for Emission Reduction Unit. It may sound technical, but the idea behind it is quite simple.

Companies that supply petrol and diesel are required to contribute to making Dutch transport more sustainable. One way they can meet these obligations is by purchasing emission reduction units.

And that’s where you, as an EV driver, come in.

When you charge your electric car at home, the electricity used can -under certain conditions- be registered. Based on that data, ERE units can be generated, which have a market value.

A portion of that value can then be paid out to you.

In short: you can receive compensation for electricity you already use to charge your EV.

How much can you earn with ERE certificates?
A very reasonable question -and an important one.

Your earnings mainly depend on the number of kilowatt-hours (kWh) you charge at home each year and the market value of ERE units.

Let’s take a simple example.

Suppose you use 4,500 kWh per year to charge your EV at home. With an example compensation of €0.10 per kWh, it looks like this:

Annual charged electricity: 4,500 kWh
Example compensation per kWh: €0.10
Gross annual earnings: €450.00

A nice amount for something you’re already doing.

Keep in mind that the inboekdienstverlener (certificate service provider) may deduct fees from this amount.

Also, the compensation is not fixed. The value of ERE units can fluctuate, meaning you may receive more or less over time.

So it’s not guaranteed income -but it is an interesting opportunity to generate extra value from your existing charging setup.

Is my charging station eligible for ERE certificates?
Not every charging station automatically qualifies.

A key requirement is that the electricity delivered to your EV must be measured reliably.

For home chargers, this typically means your charging station must have a MID-certified kWh meter.

There are also conditions related to your electricity connection, ownership, and the registration of your charging data.

If you’re unsure whether your charger qualifies, simply check the technical specifications or ask your manufacturer, installer, or certificate service provider.

It would be a shame to miss out on compensation if your charger is already suitable.

Do I need solar panels to participate?
No, you don’t!

You do not need solar panels to qualify for ERE certificates.

Even if you charge your EV entirely with electricity from the grid, you can participate under the scheme’s conditions.

If you do have solar panels, you can of course use your self-generated electricity to charge your car. For private home charging, this does not automatically mean you receive more ERE units per kWh. With or without solar panels: it’s worth checking whether your charger qualifies.

Can I still register my charging sessions from 2026? A very relevant question, especially if you’ve been driving electric for a while.

The ERE scheme started on 1 January 2026. This means earlier charging sessions from 2026 may still be eligible. There are conditions, though.

You must be able to prove how much electricity you delivered to your EV. The registration must also meet the applicable rules and deadlines. So it’s wise to check in time which charging data is available and whether it can still be registered.

This way, you avoid missing out on compensation.

How does registration for ERE certificates work through ShareCharge?
At ShareCharge, we like to keep things simple. We believe EV drivers shouldn’t have to navigate complex administrative procedures themselves.

That’s why we work with Laadloon, a specialized partner that handles the registration and processing of ERE certificates.

Through the ShareCharge platform, you can sign up for this service. Our partner then takes care of the underlying registration and administration.

This means you don’t have to figure out how to register your charging data with the Dutch Emissions Authority (NEa).

Our goal is to make the process as easy and transparent as possible.

Why choose ShareCharge?
At ShareCharge, we look beyond just charging your EV. We believe your charging station can offer far more value than you might expect. That’s why we’re building one platform where multiple opportunities come together.
